Uzpromstroybank (SQB) has announced a search for a director of its artificial intelligence department. According to industry channels, the bank is forming an independent division to manage machine learning models and build an AI strategy.
What happened
The new executive will be tasked with developing a roadmap for the bank's AI transformation. The area of responsibility will include the implementation of analytical algorithms, machine learning, and generative AI.
Building an AI Governance system is highlighted as a separate block in the role description. This involves developing internal policies and standards to ensure the transparency and ethical use of algorithms. The department director will also represent the bank's interests regarding artificial intelligence to regulators and auditors.
Furthermore, the division will take on the management of MLOps infrastructure and organize collaboration between the IT division, business units, and the data management function.
Country and market
SQB is one of the largest banks in Uzbekistan. The search for an executive of this level indicates that the bank is formalizing its work with algorithms.
There is currently little public data in open sources about dedicated AI structures with direct access to regulators in other major financial institutions in Central Asia. Most often, banks in the region develop data analytics within existing IT directorates or risk management divisions, although there are no exact market statistics.
Why it matters
Separating artificial intelligence into an independent management vertical with AI Governance functions looks like a signal that the bank is beginning to view the technology as core infrastructure. This requires separate risk controls and the establishment of clear rules of the game for supervisory authorities, especially when generative networks are involved in the processes.
What's next
The bank will have to fill the position in a market with a limited pool of candidates who have proven managerial experience in MLOps and AI strategy. The launch of the department could become a benchmark for other banks in Uzbekistan when reviewing their organizational structures.
