Alaqan Group Limited is demanding that Kaspi Bank be barred from using the name Kaspi Alaqan for its palm-payment service, citing an earlier registration of the Alaqan trademark.
The case is being heard by the Specialized Interdistrict Economic Court of Astana, presided over by Judge Roza Zhanadilova. A patent attorney appointed by the court concluded that the designations are confusingly similar and the services overlap, though a final verdict has not yet been delivered. Kaspi Bank previously rejected the accusations, explaining that “alaqan” is a common Kazakh word meaning “palm” and that the name merely describes the payment method.
