Otbasy Bank may remove 200,000 people from housing waitlist after audit

According to kapital.kz, about 200,000 of the more than one million Kazakhstanis on the subsidized housing waitlist could be removed for failing to meet eligibility criteria.

Azat Ashimov, director of the first-time homebuyer center department at Otbasy Bank, said the audit revealed citizens who no longer need housing or have lost their eligibility. Owning property or losing Kazakh citizenship are among the grounds for removal. The bank received authorization to conduct the inventory without applicants’ consent and is currently reviewing the findings before deciding on deregistration.

As of October 21, 1,089,634 people are registered on Otbasy Bank’s housing waitlist. Since March 2, 2026, the bank allocates housing only after an inventory review: applicants who have not cleared the audit remain on the list, but cannot participate in allocations.
