According to Kapital.kz, the National Bank of Kazakhstan has issued a warning about a new phone scam where fraudsters first elicit SMS codes under the pretext of parcel delivery, then call claiming to represent eGov and the National Bank to report an account breach.
According to the National Bank’s warning, the scammers first call posing as a courier or postal service and ask for a code from an SMS message, ostensibly to confirm parcel delivery. They manufacture a sense of urgency, claiming the courier is already waiting to hand over the shipment.
After obtaining the code, the attackers move to the second stage: they call posing as an eGov employee and report an alleged account breach and personal data leak. To make the story convincing, they may claim that the “Stop-Credit” service has been activated and that law enforcement is monitoring the situation. The ultimate goal is to gain access to citizens’ funds.
The National Bank advises carefully verifying SMS senders, never sharing codes with third parties, and immediately hanging up on suspicious calls to ring official numbers back instead. Guidance is available through the National Bank’s contact center at 1477.
