The National Bank of Kazakhstan has warned of a multi-stage fraud scheme where scammers pose as public services or banks and send alerts about digital powers of attorney or loans to cause panic and prompt victims to call the number provided.
During the call, the fraudsters pose as employees of the National Bank, government agencies, or law enforcement, claiming that illegal activities are being carried out in the victim’s name: loans are being taken out, companies registered, or suspicious financial transactions conducted.
Under the guise of preventing these activities, the attackers convince the individual to share SMS verification codes, provide bank card details, install a mobile app, transfer funds to a “safe account,” or grant remote access to their device.
The National Bank reiterated that its staff do not ask for card details, SMS codes, or PINs, do not suggest transfers to safe accounts, and do not make audio or video calls. Anyone receiving suspicious messages is advised to contact the official call center of their bank or government service, or reach out to law enforcement if targeted by fraud.
