The National Bank of Kazakhstan published an updated register of payment systems, classifying the Interbank Money Transfer System as systemically important, while the Interbank Clearing System and Visa are designated as significant.
At the end of 2023, the IMTS, operated by the National Payment Corporation of the NBK, handles more than 97% of payments made by participants in the foreign exchange market, the securities market, and the banking sector. The Interbank Clearing System processes 41% of total market payment volume, excluding the IMTS. Seven international money transfer systems also operate in Kazakhstan, one of which is classified as a significant payment system.
