Passengers of Bishkek’s municipal transport can now pay their fares via the MegaPay mobile app without commission. The system operates using QR codes placed on buses and trolleybuses.
How it works
To pay the fare, a passenger scans the QR code, confirms the payment in the app, and shows the payment code to the driver. QR codes are placed both on the exterior and inside the vehicles.
An alternative method is to enter the vehicle number through the dedicated “Tulpar. Fare Payment” service within the same MegaPay app. This is convenient if the QR code is unavailable or poorly readable.
The system works for all municipal transport in Bishkek: buses and trolleybuses. The company announced this in September 2023.
Why this matters for Kyrgyzstan
The launch of QR payments in Bishkek’s public transport is an important step in the digitalization of urban mobility in Kyrgyzstan. Previously, passengers could only pay with cash, which created inconveniences and slowed down boarding.
The main signal here is that Kyrgyzstan is starting to catch up with neighboring countries in the field of digital transport payments. Similar systems have already been operating in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan for several years.
For the market, this is a test of users’ readiness for cashless payments in everyday scenarios. Public transport is one of the most mass-market services, and success here could stimulate the development of digital payments in other areas.
Market context
MegaPay is one of Kyrgyzstan’s leading fintech apps, offering a wide range of digital services: from money transfers to utility payments and obtaining certificates.
Integration with municipal transport expands the app’s ecosystem and makes it more in demand for daily use. This is especially important for retaining users amid growing competition in Kyrgyzstan’s fintech market.
What’s next
The project’s success in Bishkek could become the foundation for scaling to other cities in Kyrgyzstan. It remains unclear whether MegaPay plans to expand the system or if other payment apps will be connected.
An important question is how the system will affect passenger boarding speed and drivers’ readiness to work with digital payments. This will determine whether QR payments become a mass payment method or remain an additional option.
