Kazakhstan to raise foreign currency deposit rate cap to 2.5%

Starting October 1, 2026, Kazakhstan will increase the maximum rate on foreign currency savings deposits with terms over 12 months from 1% to 2.5% per annum.

The decision comes as part of a phased liberalization of foreign currency deposit rate regulations, according to the Kazakhstan Deposit Insurance Fund (KDIF). The new rate cap of 2.5% per annum will apply to deposits opened or renewed after October 1, 2026. This serves as the recommended upper ceiling, with banks setting their specific terms independently.

For other foreign currency deposits—term and demand deposits of any duration, as well as savings deposits of 12 months or less—the existing cap remains at 1% per annum. The KDIF insurance coverage for retail foreign currency deposits remains unchanged at up to 5 million tenge, including accrued interest.
