Assets of Kazakhstan's Islamic Banks Surge 33-Fold in 16 Years

In August 2026, assets of Kazakhstan’s Islamic banks reached 315.3 billion tenge compared to 9.6 billion tenge in August 2010, yet their share in the banking sector remains at 0.42%.

Over the past five years, assets of Islamic banks in Kazakhstan grew by an average of 19.2% per year. Growth was particularly sharp in 2024, jumping from 96.7 billion tenge in August 2023 to 218.5 billion tenge a year later.

Kazakhstan’s Islamic banking market is highly concentrated. In August 2026, the combined loan portfolio of the two Islamic banks stood at 182.5 billion tenge, with Islamic Bank ADCB accounting for 90.5% of the total. In deposits, the share of Islamic banks is significantly smaller, standing at 0.08% of the entire banking sector.

In the Astana International Financial Centre, the AFSA public register listed one Islamic bank with an active license and six companies holding an Islamic financing license as of early October 2026.
